So. You’ve just started university and all of a sudden you’ve got more freedom than you could ever imagine. As great as it is, some people forget that they are still operating within the confines of both the law and the policies of the university. It is unfortunately very common for students to have run ins with the police and university authorities, and we don’t think you want to be one of them. It can make life very, very difficult for you. So here are our top tips for avoiding run ins with authorities during your time at university.
1. Drink Responsibly
There’s nothing wrong with a little alcohol around campus, assuming you are of the legal age. But the next time you decide to throw a house party, make sure you and your friends are very quiet to avoid the police being called over loud noise. This is one of the most common causes of police getting involved during university drinking events. Keep the noise down and there should be few issues. Also, make sure to know your limits. Avoiding authorities is one thing but you also don’t want to spend the night in the hospital having your stomach pumped from overdoing it! And finally, don’t drink and drive. We know you’ve heard it a million times before, but the consequences for both yourself and others can be astronomical. Don’t do it.
2. Avoid Using A Fake ID
We know how irritating it can be to see your older frat brothers or sorority sisters going to the bar legally while you’re too young to go out and drink. But don’t be tempted into using a fake ID. The consequences are a lot harsher than you might think. While you might hear stories of people just having theirs taken away, it only takes one angry bouncer or police officer to write you up and lay down the law on you. It’s not worth the risk, you’ll have plenty of time to hit the bars when you come of age, so just be patient and wait a few more years.
3. Avoid Shoplifting or Theft
Sounds obvious right? But what about when you’re dead broke and desperately need a new computer? Don’t even think about theft. Nothing you could steal could be worth the time spent in jail, or even kicked out of university for your irresponsible actions. If you truly need more money, try getting a job on the side, maybe even working for a branch of the university as a student assistant. This is what you’ll have to do as an adult anyway to make money, so better to start now.
4. Men – Treat Women Ethically
This one goes out specifically to the men. There has been a lot of buzz lately about campus rapes performed by men not understanding the gravity of what they’re doing. You need to understand that no absolutely means no. It is not ‘cool’ to try to push a woman beyond her limits for a one night stand. At least you won’t think so in prison. Be respectful of women’s desires and don’t try to take advantage of them when they’re drunk. You’ll know when things are OK and when things are not. Use your most conservative judgment.
